No Bad Days - Kyle

The Tsunami that wasn’t

March 12, 2011

Yesterday my dock buddy Bill and I headed out for a quick overnight cruise to Newport. We woke up this AM to the news of huge earthquake 10,000 miles away and a big wave coming our way at 8:30. We know it is safer to be out in the open ocean rather than in a harbor during a tsunami but we were told that the harbor had been closed for both in and out traffic. (We later find out what they meant was that the road had been closed, not the sea opening to the harbor…) Since we thought we couldn’t leave we put out another anchor and prepared for the 1-3 foot surge. Which never came. No surge. No tsunami. No wave. We heard that other harbors had some big surge and damage, but we were spared, as was Dana. About noon we found out that the harbor was open after all and we decided to leave towards Dana. The day was fairly calm so we motored a while, sailed a while, motored the rest.

No drama. No Damage. Sorry if any of you are disappointed, and thanks so much for so many calls about our safety.

flashback- final week in Baja - in memory of Bob

March 10, 2011

Flashback- Final Week Sea of Cortez February 2011.

After our crossing from Santa Rosalia to San Carlos, Steve needed to head back to the states. Diny and I still had some free time to play and decided to stay out for a while longer. Steve left the boat in our hands when he left, and she and I took off for another week of gunk holing (exploring bays and harbors along the coast) . Diny and I share many of the same ideas about sailing, we both preferred to sail rather than motor too much, and...

back in Dana, and a Baja flashback- hiking Tabor canyon

March 7, 2011
hello, after a 13 hour bus ride from Guymas to LA, and a car ride to Dana we bummed from the guy who unloaded our luggage from the bus, I am back in dana. It was so very great to be in baja for 2 months, but I admit it is great to be back in my own home boat.  Diny stopped off here on her way back north and we sailed No Bad Days for 2 days. When not sailing, we watched all 6 hours of my new DVD version of Lonesome Dove.  Diny was a good sport and pretended to enjoy it. Gus is still the most p...

Completed the crossing from baha to the mainland

February 20, 2011

We have completed the crossing from Santa Rosalia on Baja back over to San Carlos /Guymas on the mainland, 85 miles. We were watching for a good safe weather window and it was an easy crossing with no problems or drama. We started out at 3 PM in calm no wind conditions and motored at 4 knots for 10 hours. We (Diny came back to join us for the crossing so it the 3 of us.) each took 2 hour watches, but conditions were so easy and the full moon night was so beautiful that we all frequently sa...

North to Santa Rosalia.

February 14, 2011

On Monday the 11th there was a break in the weather so we made a run up the coast towards our next major destination ,Santa Rosalia, about 90 miles away to the north, (Santa Rosalia is north of Santispac where I first connected with Steve and Diny a month ago, and will be our jumping off point for the 80 mile crossing back over to San Carlos where the boat will be pulled out and stored for the year. Diny had so much fun the first time that she is planning to come back down, meet us in Sant...

baja 2-5-11 Escondido area still

February 5, 2011

Hello, we are back in Escondido after weathering a bit of a day 5blow over on a nearby island, Danzante. It was forecasted to be pretty windy and the little bay over there (2 miles away) was more snug and protected than the main harbor here. . We put out 2 anchors and 2 lines to the shore and handled it just fine. Gusts were reported to 54 knots. it was cold so we kept hunkered in the cabin most of the time and i finally finisheded reading War and Peace!  we did go to shore a few times for...

baja part 3- Escondido area

January 29, 2011

Baja 1-28-2011

Hello, we are back in Puerto Escondido after cruising out and around several islands in the area. The area is a national park and is protected as a nature preserve. They try to have people not bring any non native species of cooties and critters ashore, but there does not seem to be any enforcement of any kind. We saw signs pointing out the rules on the shores of the popular bays , and there is supposed to be a fee for a park pass which we would have been glad to buy, but coul...

baja part 2

January 16, 2011

Hello, all is well here in baja. Sorry for the delay in communicating, I have had no internet for several days. We enjoyed hanging out in santispac Hiking on the beach, kayaking, etc. and waiting for a window of calmer weather when we could move on down the coast. There has been a string of days of strong winds here caused by a high pressure system in the 4 corners area up in the states, which causes strong winds to blow here. Yes we are on a sailboat and wind should be a good thing but these...

My day in court

December 28, 2010

Today was the first time I have ever set foot into a courtroom, and I walked out chastened and resolved to change my evil-doing ways.

In October I was in Dana making a left turn at a light that was yellow turning red as I entered the intersection. A flash of light suggested I had just been busted. But who knows, it could have been a glint of sunlight off a shiny chrome bumper, or the paparazzi. (I get that a lot you know…). When I got to SLC in November what did I find in the mail, but a...
