Yesterday my dock buddy Bill and I headed out for a quick overnight cruise to Newport. We woke up this AM to the news of huge earthquake 10,000 miles away and a big wave coming our way at 8:30. We know it is safer to be out in the open ocean rather than in a harbor during a tsunami but we were told that the harbor had been closed for both in and out traffic. (We later find out what they meant was that the road had been closed, not the sea opening to the harbor…) Since we thought we couldn’t leave we put out another anchor and prepared for the 1-3 foot surge. Which never came. No surge. No tsunami. No wave. We heard that other harbors had some big surge and damage, but we were spared, as was Dana. About noon we found out that the harbor was open after all and we decided to leave towards Dana. The day was fairly calm so we motored a while, sailed a while, motored the rest.

No drama. No Damage. Sorry if any of you are disappointed, and thanks so much for so many calls about our safety.
