Well, this weather has me all befuddled. The big storm never did hit Long Beach, after all those warnings and me chickening out and staying in the marina there another night because of it! I sailed on back to Newport yesterday in easy calm conditions. After a quiet night I was launched today for Dana, with warnings of santa ana winds coming today. These are strong winds coming in off the desert and are stronger inland, but can still hit the water with some force, but I was ready for them. Nothing. Nada. I sailed along in perfectly calm seas, moderate winds, so calm in fact that I noticed a spider spinning a huge web up in my rigging as I sailed! Now I know that spider webs are stronger than steel (pound for pound…) but this was crazy! (She spelled out “Some Boat” in the web and we had a nice conversation….
I just finished reading a nice book called “the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie society”. Shock!, I know, that I might read something other than sailing junk. It was a historical fiction about life during the German invasion and occupation of Guernsey island (off the coast of England) during WW2 and was a very good story. It was told completely in the form of letters going back and forth between all these characters. Fun book, I recommend it. (Thanks to my friend Diana for leaving it here for me!).
