No Bad Days - Kyle

My boat had no name that I know of when I bought it. I have christened her No Bad Days. This comes from back in the days at work. I have been in sales my whole life and read a lot of sales books (past tense. Now I read sails books...) My favorite sales book of all time is "The Accidental Salesperson”. In one section he refers to a movie Back Draft where the big brother is an experienced firefighter saving lives, and little brother is “just a real estate salesman”. Big brother is belittling little brother about the relative merits of their careers, how in sales it’s no big deal if you have a bad day. “In firefighting, if you have a bad day, people die!”

The author of the book challenged every sales person to never have a bad day. Make every day count, as if lives depended on it. I made up a little sign “No Bad Days” and stuck it on my wall. Now my office was at street level on a busy street and I guess people would walk by, look in the window, and notice that little sign. Total strangers would come up to me in lunch cafes or wherever and say “Hey! you are that No Bad Days guy right?”

That sign hung there for years and that thought guided every aspect of my work, and when I retired I left it there for the next guy. I hope it helps them.

It seemed like a fitting name for a boat. Sort of along the lines of “ A bad day sailing is better than any good day working.” (Sorry dad!)

When I left Utah to come live on No Bad Days, my mom made a ball cap with No Bad Days embroidered across the front. So very cool! Thanks again Mom! Every day here people see the cap and comment about the saying, not even realizing the rest of the story.

Make every day count, No Bad Days, no matter what it is you are doing.
